Aloha Shirt Painting by Cathy Torchiana
Cathy Torchiana has spent her life weaving together two lifelong passions—art and golf. Her dedication to the sport spanned 15 years and culminated in her induction into the Coaches Hall of Fame.In 1993, Cathy moved to Maui and quickly became a dedicated leader in the island’s vibrant arts community. She served on the board of directors for Hui No'eau, chaired the beloved Christmas House, and took on roles as both President and Show Chair of Art Maui. Her support for the MACC has been equally impactful—most notably as overall chair of Maui Calls in 2002 and co-chair in 2003 with the fabulous Helen MacArthur. Some of Cathy’s most cherished memories come from working alongside former MACC gallery director Darrell Orwig to transform the gallery space each year to match Maui Calls’ evolving themes. "Hilo Bay" Painting by Kari McCarthy
Kari McCarthy is recognized as one of Maui’s leading colorists, celebrated for her luminous oil landscapes that explore the interplay of light and atmosphere. “I paint landscapes,” Kari says, “but it’s the color of nature that I’m after.” By letting go of conventional color assumptions, she reveals the shifting tones of the natural world — where a road might turn lavender at dusk or golden at sunrise. Her deep understanding of color theory stems from nearly three decades of study with acclaimed artist and educator Dick Nelson, a student of Josef Albers. Nelson calls Kari one of his finest students — a distinction echoed by collectors worldwide. Her work is held in both public and private collections, and she exhibits regularly in Maui galleries and weekly at the Four Seasons Resort Wailea’s Artists’ Showcase. Kari lives and paints in Kula with her husband, Azby Chouteau, and their cheerful dog, Lucy. Her painting Hilo Bay — an original oil on Belgian linen (12” x 12”, 13.5” x 13.5” framed) — is capturing the quiet beauty and subtle color shifts of Hawai‘i’s beloved landscape.

"Puamana Shore" Painting by Michael Clements
Michael Clements discovered a love for art early—famously drawing bold orange crayon lines around every wall of his childhood home. His formal journey began at age 12, learning oil painting from his great-grandmother, Alice Colerick, a dedicated daily painter in her 80s. Though his path included careers in horticulture, machining, and entrepreneurship, art remained a constant. Now based on Maui, Michael paints outdoors daily, capturing the shifting light and color of the landscape. Influenced by the 19th-century Italian plein air painters known as I Macchiaioli, he continues to grow through study with contemporary artists. His work has been featured in juried shows across Hawai‘i and the mainland, including the Maui Plein Air Invitational and the American Impressionist Society exhibition. His paintings are held in both public and private collections, including the State of Hawai‘i art collection. Michael’s piece, Puamana Shore (Pastel, 14x20), is a vibrant plein air study celebrating Maui’s enduring coastline.
